Bill Gillham lived behind me when I was six or seven years old and we were great playmates. I remember that he got into all kinds of trouble because he buried my new winter coat and our mothers were not pleased. Bill was struck by lightning when he was about seven years old. He was standing under a tree in the front yard to get out of the sudden thunderstorm and holding on to a scooter. I remember my mother screaming when she saw it happen and her running to his house. Luckily, a taxi was turning the corner at the moment the lightning struck and the driver scooped him up and drove to the hospital, where they were able to save his life. His ruddy complexion was the result of the burns he sustained.
Bill moved to California as an adult and later died in a mountain climbing accident at age 37. He was such a nice guy, always happy and friendly.
