Leroy Lewis was a dear friend of mine, and he will be missed. Leroy was a fantastic athlete, and loved all sports. Leroy and I played baseball two years for Odessa College; As a matter of fact, during his sophomore year, Leroy was honored as a " Junior College Little All American".
Odessa College did not have a football program at the college. He and I set up a six man, intermural football program, for our Freshman and Sophomore Years. We played a schedule of 24 games, for the 2 year period, and we were undefeated, the entire 2 year period.
Leroy would have ended up playing Baseball and Football in his last two years of college, and probably on a full scholarship. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have played Pro Baseball And/Or Professional Football.
He had the natural ability, God given ability, and above all, the " Right Attitude." Leroy left this earth too soon, and was only in his early Twenties .
In 1963, I was selling life insurance for Northwestern Mutual in Oklahoma City. LeRoy Lewis was selling for someone in College Station. We met in Denton the week before the president was killed in Dallas and made plans to move to Abilene and open an insurance agency together in early 1964. In December , LeRoy had been to San Marcos to deliver some insurance to a client. He was returning to College Station. For some reason he turned around and was headed back toward SanMarcos when he was killed in a one car accident. Don't know if he fell asleep at the wheel or not. Just know I lost one of my best friends. I hated it when Ector's doors opened and he had to change schools.
