I had Mrs. Filleman for biology and chemistry. As a result of her classes I sailed through biology and chemistry at UT Austin. She was a wonderful teacher.
C.J. "Pete" Peters has a thoughtful tribute to her in his book The Virus Hunters. I also remember coming out of her tests with black stains on my arms from their sweating against the lab tables.
I particularly remember the day when Marvin DeBolt threw his failed chemistry experiment out the window and started over before Mrs. F. came over to give him a grade. There was a stain down the front of the school for many years before the stone was finally sandblasted. Marvin also created a fire extinguisher that spewed all over her face. All she said was, "Oh, Marvin."

She was tough but I, for one, learned a great deal from her. For some odd reason, she really took a liking to me.
