HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, March 25, 1997, marks the seventh anniversary of the passing of William Miller "Bill" Holm, a respected educator and civic leader in the Odessa community; and
WHEREAS, He was well regarded for his noteworthy career with the Ector County Independent School District, a career that spanned 33 years and included more than a decade of distinguished service as superintendent; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holm's tenure was marked by many significant accomplishments, including the implementation of the district's acclaimed special education and magnet school programs; he also supervised the development and refurbishment of several area schools, and under his watch, both Ratliff Stadium and the district's current administration building were constructed; and
WHEREAS, An educator in the truest sense of the word, he was committed to enhancing academic, cultural, and athletic opportunities for all his students; Mr. Holm received accolades from professional organizations across the nation for his devoted service and was also awarded the Freedom Foundation Valley Forge Medallion of Honor for developing course work on patriotism; and
WHEREAS, Despite the rigorous demands of his career, he consistently made time in his busy schedule to work for the betterment of his community, and the many organizations that benefited from his participation included the Odessa YMCA, the Permian Historical Society, and the Presidential Museum; in recognition of his exemplary civic involvement, he was named Odessa's Outstanding Citizen in 1986; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Holm and his beloved wife, Enid, further served their community through their active involvement in the arts, giving generously of their time and talents to assist several worthy organizations, including the Odessa Arts Association, the Broadway Theatre League, and the Permian Playhouse; and
WHEREAS, Although Mr. Holm's contributions have been greatly missed, Mrs. Holm has done an admirable job of continuing her husband's legacy as a patron of the arts; by donating the proceeds from her book Theatrically Speaking, she made the first individual gift to the Cultural Endowment for Texas, and her generosity has benefited Texas Nonprofit Theatres and the American Association of Community Theatre as well; and
WHEREAS, A man of great energy and vision, Bill Holm left an indelible mark on the community he was proud to call home, and his memory endures to this day in the hearts and minds of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the memory of William Miller "Bill" Holm and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Enid Holm; to his daughter, Enid Ann Woodward; and to the many other friends and relatives of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of William Miller "Bill" Holm.
