'Coach' Raymond Newton
ODESSA - Raymond Newton, 81, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Marshall.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug 27, 2001, at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Bugg of Community Care Hospice officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Ray was a football coach and teacher at Odessa High School for many years and D.E. Coordinator at Ector High School. He was a devoted husband, father, teacher and coach. He was well liked by faculty and students. Ray touched many lives and will be remembered by his "kids" as he always referred to his football team.
Ray's family would like to express their thanks to Nurses Unlimited, West Texas Cancer Center and Community Care Hospice of Odessa and their devoted staff, who were with them all of the way. They offer special thanks to Manuel Rios, his nurse, who stayed with Ray until the end.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Linnie Gertrude Newton and W.C. Newton.
He is survived by his wife, Jerry Newton of Odessa; a daughter, Pat Winchell and husband Joe of Midland; two sons, David M. Newton, Tad Newton and wife Cheri, both of Odessa; four granddaughters, Mindy and Shelly Winchell and Chrissy and Ashley Newton; two brothers, O.E. "Red" Newton and wife Maxine of Odessa and Melvin Newton and wife Norma of Stephenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services have been entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
