Dr. Everett Maurice Alfred

ODESSA: Everett Maurice Alfred, Born February 10, 1929 in Trinity, Texas at home to Joseph Alfred and El Zora Bowen Alfred and passed away at home on December 6, 2008. He graduated high school in 1945. He went to Sam Houston State and began singing under the direction of Euwell Porter. Dr. Porter, Maurice and several other choir students transferred to Hardin Simmons University in Abilene where he received his Bachelor of Science degree on May 29, 1950. In September of 1948, he met Glenna Parr, the cute redhead who became the love of his life. His first year of teaching was in September of 1950 at Stark High School in Orange, Texas as choral director. On April 21, 1951, he and Glenna married and had 45 wonderful years together including years in Odessa as choral director at Odessa High School and Odessa Junior College. From this union they produced a daughter, Laurie Alfred Wash. Maurice received his Masters of Music from Texas Tech in 1967 and his Doctorate of Philosophy from Texas Tech in 1980. He was never happier than when he was directing or talking about music or remembering all his students. His first school in Orange recognized him with honors and a memorial plaque. 
 
Maurice served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956 in the Panama Canal Area. 
 
After the death of his wife, he married Jerrie White. They had 12 wonderful years together caring for one another. 
 
He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Alfred; mother, El Zora Alfred; sister, Elaine Gee, Margie Alfred; and wife Glenna. 
 
Survivors are wife, Jerrie Alfred; daughter, Laurie Alfred Wash and husband Jeff Wash of Odessa; stepdaughter, Meloni Puishes and husband Ed of Buchanan Dam; step son, Phillip Phifer and wife Jennifer of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Garrison Wash, Laurlyn Wash, and Grantham Wash of Odessa, Casey Covington and wife Mary, Kerry Covington of San Antonio, Rebekah Phifer, Mary Phifer, and Austin Phifer of Corpus Christi; cousin Jerry Jones of North Carolina; and many other friends, family and students. 
 
Dr. Alfred was a member and deacon at the First Baptist Church of Odessa and had led music and worship in churches across West Texas including Second Baptist Church and Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Odessa. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Odessa College Choral Department or The Music Ministry at First Baptist Church, Odessa.
 

Memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church on Monday, December 29 at 10:30 a.m.
